The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Oranga Moti Iwi.” FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 1901.

The resolution passed -at the last monthly meeting of the Riwaka B.oad Boa- d protesting against the Motueka 1) a-cmgh Council being allowed to interfere with the foreshore in their district, adds another difficulty to the settlement of the Harbor Board question. The Nelson Harbor Board, at their meeting agreed to the exclusion of the Motueka Borough Councils area from then- jurisdiction, but would not waive its claim to tax the other land mentioned in the Act under which it owes its existence. The "Waimea County Council has also made a suggestion that a poll be taken to ascertain the

opinions of the settlers. We are sure the settlers on this side of the Bay will give a negative vote when the poll is taken to raise a loan of or .£BO,OOO to cut a channel through the Boulder Bank, concerning which scheme a wide divergence of opinion exists even in Nelson City. The project is an experiment, and there is no telling what the ultimate cost of the work will be. The experience of other towns in the Colony which have gone in fo3* artificalbreakwaters and harbors has not been encouraging or satisfac-

tory. With respect to the Nelson Harbor Board, it actually pledged itself to Mr Leslie Reynold’s scheme, before data, absolutely essential, had been procured, True, the members considered the estimated cost of the alternative plans of Messrs Bell and Reynolds, hut we maintain when contemplating spending ratepayers money, it was the Board’s duty, to publicly invite plans and specifieationsfrom competent engineers throughout the Colony. As it was, other persons, actuated by the best cf motives, were politely, and in some coses rudely, snubbed by the Board. We shall have more to say on this subject in a future issue.
