The Motueka Star PUBLISHED TUESDAYS AND FRIDAYS. “Te Oranga Moti Iwi.” FRIDAY, AUGUST 30, 1901.

Wellington parents are complaining of the expense of ever-changing school books. The School Committees are being asked to endorse the following resolution :—“ That the Education Board be asked to adopt the same school books for all the schools under its control.” The frequent changing of school books has been made the subject oj comment at meetings of school committees in various parts of the Col- < nv. Not very long ago the question was referred to by a prominent member of the school Committee in Nelson, who had received complaints from the parents of children attending the scd ools. We are at aloss to understand why the Minister fox* Education does not take the matter mto his hands and recommend joint action on the part of Education Boards to remedy the evil. At present, the Head Master or Mistress <>f a school resolves that a new grammar, Reader, History, or Atlas is necessary and the. children are told to go to certain booksellers and buy the book. Now to a parent this means an expense he is sometimes not in a position to incur and it makes him come to the conclusion that our boasted system of free education is not a luxury, but has to be paid for in a round about fashion. The cost of equipping a child when it is shifted from one standard to another Is no inconsiderable item ; when the par-ent is called upon during the year to provide other books not absolutely necessary his language is “not loud, but deep.” The evil should be grappled with for the benefit of all concerned, and the sooner the better. If the Education Boards are disinclined to take up the grievance, we would suggest that School Committees league themselves together, and by circular invite the co-operation of the whole of the Committees. The question could then be dealt with effectively and finally. Just now, too much authority
