LETTER FROM PEHIMANA TAMAIPAREI

Waitotara, May 17th, 1858. Go, my letter to Governor Browne in Auckland, Friend, Salutation. Friend, I am engaged in trying to bring my people, the Ngarawra, into submission to tbe Government and the Queen's Law*. I and my father, Aperabama Taniaiparea, are doing what we can to effect this, for I am satisfied U>at tbe Maori customs are bad, and therefore oppose ibem; not one of tbem is good. For tbis reason. I urged my people tbe Ngarauru that tbey should all accept tbe just Laws or tbe Queen, and tbey assented. We assembled at Perekama to discuss tbe question, and on two occasions tbe assent or the meeting was given. There were 300 persons present. I rose and spoke thus, hearken, O people, let ns acknowledge only tbe Queen's Law nnd tbe Laws of God. To tbis the meeting asserted let us leave quarrelling Tor other tribes, why should we bave anything to' do with that evil. Lei our weapon be the spade, with which we may subdue the soil and make it yield sustenance by us all. I am utterly disgusted with Maori customs. From your loviog friend, PfKIMAIU.
