HAUAURU TE OTATU.

Died, on the 10th of the present month, Hauauru Te Otatu, one of the chiefs of the Ngatipaoa; his immediate tribe was Te Matekiwaho. His grandfather was Tipaa, whose son was Mahaki, whose was llauauru Te Olam. He die;t at Taapo in the Thanh--, after only a short illness. He was not far advance ! in years when he died ; was a man of good appearance, and fuily tattooed. lie was hospitable 10 strangers, and by no means of a passionate temper; spoke fluently on every sii!)ject of importance, and was not boastful, or importunate. The saying of his auci-stors did not apply to him Ngal;p:«oa with thin ears" —because he was not soon reused to anger Te Oiatu was a well conducted man, and carefully investigated the particulars of any offence or grievance; ho wished peace to exist among ali. lie was courteous to the Europeans, and well pleased that thev should iive near him. He suppressed many evils, and leaves behind him a memory associated with good rather than with evil.
