BAY OF ISLANDS.

A demand was made by the natives of this place a short time ago for a second payment for land which was ceded to the Europeans thirty years ago. A little reasoning with the natives shewed them the fallacy of the claim, and they at once abandoned their object. We' take this opportunity of acquainting our readers that, as a rule, one payment only will be given by the Government for land ; we hope therefore that prior to lands being offered for sale, there will be a thorough understanding among the claimants in reference to the division of the monies. Why should troubles arise from such a quarter, when it is in the power of the natives to prevent them ? All we ask the Chiefs to do is, to bring forward the real owners of the soil; the Commissioners will attend to the rest.
