; Early on Monday morning, a disastrous ■ fire took place; in a boarding house in Christchurcb known as the Silver 'Grid. Three persons—an elderly man named F.- W. Hatch, a young woman named Mrs Elsie Stack, and a young man named Thomas Smith —were burnt to death and Mr* •J. P. Smith, wife, of the of the place, is not expected to live. Eight other persons were injured, or burnt in escaping. There is a* suspicion of incendiarism. It has been decided \hat the next ballot will take place ,on Nov. 26th. About 5000 names will be drawn from Class A of/the Second Division. This ballot will leave about 5000 men in Class A, and they will be called up en bloc-in January' The men drawn in November are due to enter camp from April 2 to April 6. The boiling season will be opened by a match President v. Yice-presideet, on the green on Saturday afternoon. Visitors will-be welcomed.
