Hyde.

Quita a gloom was cast over the district od Saturday when it became known that Second-lieutenant John M'Lean had died of sickness whilst on active service. Second-Lieut. M'Lean was born in Hyde some forty years ago, and was one of our leading citizens. His energy and perseverance were the two principal traits of his character—no work too hard and no day too cold to stop him from carrying out his programme; always ready to do what was possible to assist any one i in need and always cheerful to those with whom he cams in contact. Whilst a lad he lost his late father, and ha at once took up the responsibility to work the farm, which he did succe»sfully, and was one of the most progressive farmers in the vicinity at the time of his enlistment. '

He was one of the original members of the Maniototo Mounted- Rifles, and was highly respected by all-ranks'. He served in the capacity of Lieutenant at Trentbam and again in France and Belgium. Having arrived at the. front he was attacjed to the transports, but in his last letter (on Saturday) he had been doing his share in the front trenches.

He was married, about cen years ago, to Miss Greer, of Patearoa, and two children are left, with his wife, to mourn his loss. Mrs M'Lean and family have the deepest sympathy of the whole district in their loss.

Second-Lieu tenant M'Lean was correspondent of thiß paper for many years. )

' The new member for Hyde Riding of the Maniototo County Council will in all probability be Mr Thomas Ramsay, who has been already approached by the ratepayers.
