Wedderburn.
A welcome home social was held here in Mrs White's hall last Friday night for Lanee-Corporal Thomas M'Carthy. The Wedderburn people were fully represented, with a number of visitors from laaburn; Gimmerburn, Ranfurly and Nasefty. The chairman, Mr Duncan, explained that it had bean intended to present the guest of the evening with a medal on behalf of the public, but as it had not come to hand it would be forward- " ed to Lance-Co'poral .M'Carthy later on to his address. Mr John Reid also i spoke in eulogistic terms of the young • | men who had- gone to the front and fought and bled. 1 Lance-Corporal M'Carthy, who when lie went away was a fine stamp of New Zealand manhood, unfortunately has : had the bad luck to have lost his right arm. . Two songs were rendered. by Mrs Jones in her usually efficient manner. The ladies supplied abundant refreshments. The mu3ic was supplied by Mr H. Moore (piano), Mr H. Law and Mr K. Beck (v:o'lin), Mr J. White acting as M.C. An unfortunate'and painful accident happened to Mr Hugh Shaw on Sunday ' a.'ternoon. It appears he had been iv oniside the school house and bad stood bis gun up against the building when a dog came around the corner dragging a chain and knocking down the gun, which went OS, the bullet lodging in his ancle. He must have laid for about one and a-half.hours before he attracted attention. He was taken to the i\sseby hospital but tbe doctor was unable to locate the bullet, aud he went te
