HELPING THE JEWS
I Ex-Ainbassador Henry Morgenthau (who ' represented the United States at the Sultan's Court) and Professor Felix Frankfurter (of the Harvard Law Schuol and confidential adviser to the United States Secretary of War) has been despatched on , a special mission, at t3ie request- of President Wilson, to " aJleviate the condition of the thousands of Jews (many of them American citizens) who have been expelled . from Jaffa by the Turkish authorities. I Although the United States has broken .relations with Turkey, it was believed that | Mr Morgatnthau, because of the high esj teem in which he is held by the Turkish I people, was" better fitted than any other ! . American to establish direct communica- [. tion with the Jews of Palentine.
Before Mr Morgenthau left New York a committee of prominent Jews, among tihem Jacob H. Schiff, Felix M. Warburg. Rabbi Stephen, S. Wise, Louis Marshall, and Judge Julian W. Mack, instructed him to spare no money in restoring the Jews to their homes, and "to spend millions, if necessary." Prominent Zionists, who. have drawn up formal demands on the Allies for the restoration of Palestine as a Jewish homeland, were plainly elated at the selection of the two emissaries, both of them ardent Zionists, inasmuch as the mission to Egypt is the first step in the Zionist platform. Mr .Albert Lucas, secretary of the joint distribution committee, reported that the committee had been sending £9.000 monthly to the Jews of Palestine for a Jong time, and that it had recently voted an extra appropriation of 50,000d01, to be forwarded at once, to assist those who had been expelled from their homes. "It has been impossible since the despatch, many months ago, of tihe cruiser Des Moines and the collier Ctesar with medicines and supplies for the Jews of Syria and Palestine,'' Mr Lucas added, "to provide the needed relief. Owmjr to the- international complications these supplies were never delivered. It is believed that Mr Morgenthau and Professor Frankfurter will be enabled to open negotiations with Turkey from Egypt, winch will Tesult in securing permission to forward food and other supplies to the Jews of Jaffa, Jerusalem, and elsewhere."
