The appeal of John Brown (farmer Gimmerburn), who had been closed as '■«„ J. 36 * lloWed on the ground that the appellant was over age. Appeal for a MedicaTMan. Ibe St. Bathans Medical Aid Club n^ e r aD ff aPPeal ° n beila,f of Vincent Denis Griffen, a qualified medical Ktionsr, on the ground that his ser.- ~ vices were essential to the district, and that a successor could not be obbehalf of the club. Patrick Francis M'Carthy (secretary ox the St. Bathans Medical Aid Club) gave evidence to the effect that in company with Mr R. Scott, M.P he had interviewed Dr Valentine on" the 5^' ns t-> and had placed the position of the district before him. An assurar.ce had been given then that the whole-matter; would be considered. I At this stage the chairman read a letter from Dr Byres (Waipia'ta) expressing his willingness to do Dr Griffen s work at St. Bathans durin- the period of the war, and asked the" witness if this communication altered the position.
Witness: No, because it would be unfair to hand Dr Griffen's "practice over to anyone else.
MrKellett: Did it not strike you that this was the proper tribunal to apply to and not Dr Valentine —No we thought Dr Valintine had the eantrol of these matteis.
Mr Kellett: That is whsre you make the mistake.
ihe Chairman: It seems to me that the Medical Aid Uub wants to act in exactly the same position as iD peace times.
Dr Griff en said he had volunteerrd for service in January, when he in tended to ask for leave.
j The Chairman said it di.l not appear ■ ts make a great deal of difference what I the board did in the matter. ThH Medical Department would probably arrange f'-e matter as it saw fit, and the board did not think these appeals helped'at all. The question of what would happen in the Waipiata district also entered into the consideration. The board would reserve its determination of this appeal for n month, and in the meantime would communicate with Dr Valintine and forward him a codv of Dr Byres' letter.
