A BABY'S ADVENTURE

* The adventures of a baby kept the Russell street police inquiry office busy yesterday afternoou (says the Melbourne 'Argus' of a recent date). Shortly after 6 o'clock one of the committee of the Albert Club, which has its headquarters in Hoyt's Buildings, Bourke street, the main part of which is occupied by Hoyt's Picture .Theatre, telephoned to say that they had a stray baby on their bauds. The little one, which was about 18 months old, had been lying in a perambulator in front of the theatre for two hours, p.nd, as [ it was blue with the cold, the charitable i clubman placed it in the charge of the manageress of the club dining room, who, with her two assistants, regaled the stranger witli. hot milk. Ten minutes elapsed, and the frantic father of the child rang up Russell street, to receive the assuring news that the lost one was found. He explained that he and his wife, who were visitors from Sydney, were staying at a city hotel, and had engaged an elderly woman employed, there to take the baby for an airing. Apparently the attractions of the cinema proved too strong. Prior to this the nurse had gone back to the hotel to report that she had lost her charge, and had been overwhelmed with a storm of reproaches, and bidden to r;o and seek the child. She, too, made Russeil street her objective, but appeared in person, and was much relieved to learn tlujt the child was found. She could not tell a plausible story to cover her neglect, however. "He abused ihc something cruel," she said, indignantly, referring to the father, and seemed at an utter loss to understand why.
