Tbe New York World's Pittsburg correspondent states that the Westinghouse Company is requesting 1000 volunteers to accept imprisonment for 10 months in the new plant which it is establishing to manufacture a powerful war implement, secrecy regarding the details of which is essential. It is reported to be an invention of Edison's.
Reports from the Government Labour Department indicate that there are at present numbers of men in want of work. Tbe Labour Inspector at Gisborne states that the number of applicants for employment has increased considerably within the last fews weeks, and although there is a popular impression that there is a labour shortage, no applications have been received from employers for* over two months.
