The damage done by the recent flood to the roads and bridges in the county was considerable, being estimated at £7OO. The cost of repairing Becks bridge will be about i'loo. Some settlers along the river lost heavily. We hear that Mr Hastie lost 300 sheep,. Mr T. Hall 200, and Mr A. Paterson 50, and no doubt others have lost some. Nurse Adams has left the hospital, having fulfilled her term a3 probation- j er. She has been offered a position in j Timaru. ,Miss Beatrice Reilly, of Alexandra, haß been appointed to cancy. On Tuesday, when the coach was leaving, Mr D. Hanrahan was presented with a wristlet watch before he took his final/ departure as a soldier. Thß mayor (Mr Fraser) made the presentation in an appropriate speech, and Mr Hanrahan suitably replied. At St. Bathans Mr Hanrahan was presented with a purse of sovereigns. Mr Nicoison and Mr E. Morgan referring to the guest's good qualities. On Saturday evening, about 6 o'clock Mr W. Beath was found in an unconscious condition at the foot of Levenstreet, near the Masonic Hall. He was taken to the Victoria Hotel and next day removed-to the hospital. He was sviJently seized with a paralytic stroke while prqceeding home from work. A" slight improvement took place in his condition on Monday. He crouched in a doorway, hungry and cold, Homeless and hopeless and sad; I could see at a glance he needed help, That no friend in the world he had. So I gave him a crown and choice cigar, And advised him strong drink to abjure : He moaned his need was a bed and a feed. And Woods' Great Peppermint Cure The death of Mr Robert John Swinney, of Cambrian, took-, place on June 3rd. The funeral took place at St. Bathans on Wednesday, when the Rev. W. T. "Drake conducted the service. Owing to the illness of Mr Acheson, S.M., he did.not attend the court sittings on Tuesday. Messrs Inder and M'Knight, J.P.'s, presided. F. Griffiths was charged with having liquor in his possession while prohibited. As the justices had no jurisdiction to deal with the case, it was adjourned till the July sittings.
