TELEGRAMS.

■ (Krom our own correspondent.) Dunedin, Thursday Afternoon The following report by the Special Commissioners was read at a meeting of the Waste Lauds Board yesterday : —■' We, the Commissioners appointed to visit blocks of land in runs 20 and 250 respectively, report that ws have visited and inspected blocks in Strathtaieri, Deep Dell, and Moonlight Flat. We find there ia a strongly-expressed desire on the part of the inhabitants of Macraes and Hyde to acquire land to settle upon in the vicinity of their present localities, and as we are of opinion that the land asked for by 'trie petitioners is generally suitable for agricultural purposes, W recommeiirl that a block of 10,000 acres be opened under the deferred payment system at Mo-nlight, aild that the block be so taken as to include the Moonlight face of the Taicri ridge and to front the ridge of the same. We also recommend the opening of other two blocks on Deep Dell, and that these sections found to Goiitr.a the best land after survey be dealt with Under the deferred payment system, while those that are not quite SO g'OOd mfiv ; very properly be disposed of under the agricultural leases system. This plan, we consider, will b« found much preferable to confining the whole of either block to one system ; and in making these recommendations we do so fully believing that the interest of run 240 will only be affected to the extent of a reduction in its area. We cannot recommend the Board to comply with the request preferred to throw open a block of 2000 acres on the deferred payment system on run 205, as we are of Opinion that the 14,000 acres comprised in the above recommendation will meet present requirements and fully supply the demand. We are of opinion that a large portion of the block is unsuitable for the deferred payment system, I and are further of opinion that the remaining portion of run 205 would be very seriously affected by the cancellation of such block, situated as it is in a narrow part of the run and extending high up the face of a mountain, in fact nearly to snow-line. Driving stock from the high ground down to the . little remaining winter country would be rendered very difficult, and it would be al-. most impossible to so drive after the winter snow had fallen if the block under consideration . were fenced round.—S. Green, H, Clark;." The Board minuted the following resolution :—" Resolved, To recommend to "the Government that the proposal with regard to the runs named in the Special Commissioners' report be carried out." At Hokitika the police have arrested Thomas Pyan, formerly a police officer at Dunedin, on the charge of murdering a miner named Daniels, whose body was found at Kumara a few days ago. It is said that circumstantial evidence is very strong against Ryan, and the case is one likely to present remarkable surroundings. Daniels built a but on the new rush, Ryan purchasing some ground overhead. The former was supposed to have money, and was a witness in ityan's case at Dunedin. Ryan was first to tell of Daniels being missing in March last. Tho 6kull of the deceased was fearfully smashed. The body was fully identified by his wife. Ryan has been engaged driving an express for the last six months. He had rented Daniels' house to a tenant after the deceased was missing. - Arrived—Waimea, from London.

On dit that the 'Guardian ' has purchased the ' Baity Times' with a view to amalgamation.
