The nomination. ; bf a Councillor for East "Ward took place on Saturday last at the Council Chambers, Town Hal!. Mr. Edmund Horswell, who was the only candidate nominated, was declared. ; duly elected. An application has been mads to the "Waste LaDds Board to purchase 400 acres of land on Run No. 17, Maerewhenua district. The Board refused ther.npplication, as .the consent of the runholder had not been" obtained; but tbe Chief Commissioner remarked that if the inhabitants of-the district were desirous that an agricultural block should be opened on the run, ante forwarded > lan: "application to that effect, the District Lands Officer would be instructed to report on-the matter. A telegram in;the 'North Otago Times r says that on Thursday a deputation consisting of the...Waitaki and Waimate members, Mr. de Lautour (member for Mojantjlda, dpd Mrj."W> J; Steward; (Mayor of Oamaru), and the Hons. R. Campbell and M. Holmes, waited on the Government with regard to the Naseby railway. They submitted the plans and a synopsis of the intended Bill. Major Atkinson seemed favorable to the Bill. A rcofcion for leave to introduce it haß been postponed until Thursday next, by which time the Government will give support it_ or not.
The trades' demonstration at Dunedin on Saturday last was a great affair. It is estimoted that 1500 representatives from the various trades took part. "We regret to learn that another instance of poultry stealing has occurred within our .township within the last, few days. It was only a short time since that a turkey was stolen from the premises of a well-knoWn rosid«nt. On this occasion the depredators appear to have condescended to meaner-game in the shape of two ducks, the property of Mr. Newmureh. A v roward of £2 has been offered for information which will lead to the conviction of the thief or thieves, which may, it is to be hoped, heve the desired effect of bringing these light-fingered gentlemen to justice, and thus putting a stop to these nocturnal visits and, paltry, pilferings... •.
The Mount' Ida Farmers' Club are determined to make' the forthcoming ploughing prize list and'programme has been drawn/tip, and it is expected that a large 'number Of ploughmen will compete for the honors. As the paddock selected■■ for- the match-is at. a convenient distance from Nasoby, suitable accommodation .will be provided for the large number of. visitors and others who are expected to be present to witness the contest. In the evening a dinner will be given by the Club in the Town Hall, when the successful competitors will be presented with their well-won trophies.
