THE Mount Ida Chronicle. THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1877.

A notice appears in our present issue to the effect that the price of Government water has been reduced to 20a. per Hogburn head. We trust that this concession is only a small instalment of other and further concessions, which will be. necessary before these works can become, as they should be, a source of benefit to the mining community, and profit and revenue to the Government.. So long as the payment in advance system is insisted upon so long will these works, in our opinion, prove a comparative failure. Practice makes perfect, and there is no doubt that, a3 the utilisation of these works progresses, many improvements will suggest themselves, and be adopted. It is further notified that a formal opening of the works will take place on Monday, the 23rd, but nothing is said as to what this formality ia to be, whether a luncheon, dinner, or supper, the notice sayeth not.; It is, however, an occasion deserving, we think, of commemoration. It might be worthy the consideration of the Mayor and Councillors what form the demonstration, if any, should take.
