PUBLIC MEETING.
On Thursday night a very successful meeting was held at the Town Hall, rTaseby. The Railway Committee submitted their report, and his Worship called upon Major Steward to express his views to the meeting. This resulted in a most forcible and eloquent speech. Mr Newmarch proposed the following resolution, seconded by Mr B. G-ordon That this meeting, after having hoard the proposals and views of the Oamaru Railway Deputation, considers that this district should co-operate with the Oamaru Committee for tho purpose of forwarding the scnome of bringing a line through the Marawhenua Pass, and request the County Council that they should join with the Waitaki Council in defraying tho cost of a prelimiharp survey, and in an application to Parliament for authority to construct the line; an area of 100,000 acres of land to be set aside in each County, the proceeds of which by sale or lease to form a railway fund. Mr A; Kolland, County Chairman, being called upon, expressed his views clearly, but hesitated until after the Council had had more time in expressing a definite decision. Mr_ de Lautour supported the resolution, which was carried. Mr Rowlatt proposed the second resolution— That the Railway Commiteet of Naseby remain in office for the purpose of carrying out tho spirit of the resolution passe 1 this evening. This was also agreed to. Some pleasing and well-received compliments to tbe chair terminated the meeting. Our report must stand over for next week.
