(From our 'Exchanges.) Bombay, May 4th. Khamatchnon Pacha, with several ironclads, engaged the .Russian batteries at Hrahilo, bombarded the town, &nd then withdrew. In the House of Commons, Mr. Gladstone moves that the Government continue their exertions on behalf of the Christian subjects of Turkey, and esact changes (in administration ?_), from-the Porte. ; i ; ' Liberal' leaders' disapprove of Mr. Gladstone's motion, and will move the previcus--question.
The Conservatives submit a motion supporting the Government policy. A correspondent of the * Star states that Hobart Pasha, the present Admiral of tbe Turkish fleet, served on board H.M.S., Calliope in Sew Zealand, on whieh he was known as the " wild midshipman." On:one occision he was confined for two days in the guardroom at Wanganui, owing to a scrape. He was in charge of a guuboafc in the attack on the. Maoris, at Porirua. .

Begulations for the proposed High School Seholarship:hav.ebeen]aidbefore.theEducation Board by Professor S-hand yesterday and adopted. The examinations are to be annual, and the first will take place in December next when twelve scholarships will - be- f offered. English grammer, geography, arithmetic, dictationandpenmanship, mathematics, Latin, and French constitute the subjects for. competition. To pupils unable to reside at their : homes the value of the scholarships will be ;£4O. per year, with free education; and to those residing in the neighbourhood the value ;is fixed at £2O. The scholarships cannot be held longer than three years. The whole of the Bussian army has been placed on a war footing Sir Stafford Northcote, in replying to a question in the Commons, said "that Esigland was unprepared to consent to the exclusion of war vessels from the Suez Canal, but she would take steps to protect the Canal.
