It is reported that the House 6* Commons will be asked Ibis yoar to vote a large sum for the construction of the chain of forts which is to be built in the vicinity of Chatham for the defence of the dockyard, the Medway, and London approaches. The works are to be under the direction of the Commanding Royal Engineer of the Chatham District. One of the forts is already under construction at Borsted, near .Rochester, and another will be built at Cookham, also near Rochester, the work being carried out by convicts. There will be seven forts altogether, but it will be several years before they are completed, as they will be very massive, and will be armed with heavy artillery.
