Theac.countof Mr. John M'Donald, for £lO 10s., one of the valuers appointed by ihe, Judge of the Assessment Court, was referred to the Finance Committee. . : >:; . .. -r, .'•> .- , A special meeting was held on Thursday last at the CouncihChambers, -Town. Hall; Present —His Worship the Mayor, Crs. George, Newmarch, Craig, Brookes, Dillon. > • - THE EATING ACT. This meeting'was 7 called for the purpose of making a general rateas directed by " The Rating Act, 18^6." The Town Olerk' repotted that all the preliminary arrangements' under the Act had been complied with, and that it only Remained for the Council : to determine the amount of rate necessary to meet the liabilities for the year ending the 30th June, 1878.

After discussion, it was moved by Cr. Newjtabch, seconded by Cr. Ckaig, and carried nem. con., " That a general rate of Is. in the £1 on all rateable property within the Municipality be, and is hereby, made for the ensuing year, in pursuance of " The Bating Act, 1876," and that the said rate shall become payable fourteen days after demand thereof."
