WASTE LANDS BOARD.

(Condensed from the 'Guardian.') AGRICULTURAL LEASING, MANIOTOTO. A letter waa received from the Hon. the Secretary for Crown Lands, forwarding copy of proclamation by his Excellency the Governor, setting apjirt 2500 acres in Maniototo Survey District for agricultural leasing. LIGNITE LICENSE, KYEBURN.

Application was made by Messrs. Shoen, Veale, and Gordon for license under the 91st clause of the Act to occupy six acres north of section 1, Kyeburn district, for raising lignite.—Eef erred to Warden of the district to state whether there is any necessity as to quantity of coal supplied or the price, or whether any injury will be done to.present lessees by the applicants' request being granted. j LAND FOR SETTLEMENT AT HYpB Mr. C. de Lautour transmitted.petition from settlers at Hyde, requesting thai-* block of 4000 acres be proclaimed open for selection and agricultural leasing on Deep Dell run; also, that 2000 acres be opened under the deferred payment system on Mr> Main's run, Strathtaieri. In discussing the matter, reference was made to Mr. M'Kerrow's report upon a similar petition for opening land at Moonlight

Mr. Bastings said he had seen many official reports like Mr. M'Kerrow's on Moonlight Flat, stating that land was unfit for settlement, which land was now j ielding 50 bushels to the acre. If "people wanted land, let them have it. If there was a thousand acres of land in the market more than what was wanted it was better than being a thousand acres less.

The Chief Commissi^ner thought the best thing to do would be to get the Warden ta report. He would be a local man, and vcrali

have a good idra of the wants of the district.

Mr. Bastings Bald that if the 60 men who signed the petition take up 200 acres each, that would more than absorb the quantity of of land now asked to be thrown open. The petition was forwarded by a representative man —Mr. de Lautonr—and he believed the Strathtaieri would be opened up by means of the railways. It waß the only part of the district that was really available for settlement.

Ic was reaolved to refer the petition to the District Land Officer to report.
