PUBLIC MEETING.

ST. BATHANB. A public meeting was held at the school-house," St. Bathahs, on Friday evening l last. Mr. John Ewing was voted to the Chair. The Chairman explained that the meeting had been summoned to meet the District member, and to consult together as to the desirability of assisting the movement initiated by the Oa.ro Convention, by an expression of sympathy, and aUo bv subscriptions to the fund established for the purpose of defraying the expenses of the Delegation to England. M«\ pk Latttour, bpinsr called unnn, explained the vjpws of the Council of the Convention, and also referred to.the position of Gtago deprived of its constitutional rights and its public revpnues. Mr. Mulvey proposed .that a Committee be formed to collect subscriptions for the purpose of assisting the Delegation— Committee to consist of. Messrs. Ewir><r. G-. Pnrfcon. Kenny,-W. M'Connochie. W. Pyle jr., Preseott, 0-. C-ilmora, and th" mover. He observed (hat he believed the meeting thoroughly endorsed the views o'ftbe Convention. The gentlemen hj« had named for the Committee had consented +o act as collectors. The motion was seconded bv Mr. P. O'Connor, and carripd unanimously. Mr. tte LArrTorn. being questioned as to the fffectof the Counties Act. explained its leading provisions, and the revenues the County would be possessed of, adding that the- measure was merelv a compulsory "Road Board Act. having the effpct in the interior of matin s. a few neople who were not possessed of landed property the stewards fjr the G-ovprnment, for the out of thr-ir own pockets, of-the public estate. Tt would be necessary he thought, to go in. for the Council, as the effpet. of not constituting under the Act would be that the district would be treated as an an " ou f lving district," and receive no supervision with regard to its roads and works at all. Votes of thanks were nassed to Mr. de Lautour, for bis attendance, and to the presiding Chairman, when the meeting broke up. The pressure upon our space compels us to very much condense our report.
