Mr. Preseott was called lo the Cliair. Tbc Chairman briefly explained the object'of tlie meeting, which, was, he said, to express approval of the conduct of the Olago membevs, who, acting true to Incir hustings pledges, have voted against such of lUe proposed .Constitutional chaages as are opposed to, or may be subversive of, the, iawa'u!- privileges of the.ratepayers of this important Province. Mr. G. Parton then came forward, and after dwelhug in appropriate terms on-.the political aspect of affairs as ejecting the Province of Olago, said he would take the 'liberty ol reading k iie resolutions passed at the great meeting held in Dudedin a few days ago. [The Speaker here read the Duuedin. resolutions which appeared in our issue of the 2nd inst.] Mr. Purton proposed that this meeting adopt in their entirety, the aforesaid resolutions. The resolution was seconded by Mr. il'Connochie and unanimously carried. The next resolution was proposed by Mr. Mulvey, and was as follows, viz " That the thanks of this xneeiiug are due and are hereby tendered to, Mr. de Lautour, the District member, for his able advocacy of (he. iighLs of this Province in the present Parliament, and for ably and faithfully declaring the mind of his constituents regarding the proposed Constitutional changes." Mr. G. 11. Smith, who spoke at some length in terms of deserved praise of Mr. de Lautour, seconded tho resolution, which was carried unanimously. A vote of thanks to the Chair, another to Mr. Kenny for tlie free use of his billiard room, and one io Mr. Melvin, (bellringer),' brought a very orderly, and to all appearance, a most earnest meeting to a close. |
