ST BATHANS.

{From a correspondent.) 3rd September, 1876. Sin, —It is nothing new for residents of the up-country districts tcf experience high winds at this season of the year, but I think the most violent ever experienced in St. Bathans occurred here between the hours of 2 and 4 o'clock to-day. For fully 30 minutes before its greatest force reached us, a continuous roar, as it might be of a great cataract, was heard in a westerly direction from here, but when it came it appeared to blow from north and west at the same time. Houses generally have escaped damage, but paling fences seem to have gone down before the storm like nine pins. The fences around the telegraph and Mr. Wheelers', also Mr. Melvin's sections, have been much shaken, and in part blown down. A portion of the fence of the Bank ot New South Wales office was swept away. The office of the Bank of Nevr Zealand had its back and front doors smashed open, and its fence levelled to the ground. Some damage has been done also to the few corn stacks or ricks in our vicinity. The concert in aid of the Cambrian school funds was a great success. The Secretary for Works has intimated to the Secretary of otlr local Progress Committee that tenders would be at once called for the erection of the long-prom-ised foot-bridge across the Manuherikia, between here and Hills Creek. Residents hope the calling of tenders will not be a nullity this time.
