ST BATHANS.

(From a correspondent.) August 14. It is understood that Mr. Prescott, Chairman St. Bathans Progress Comioitfee, with Messrs. Armstrong and Wilson, of .Dunedin, were deputed to wait on Secretary for Works in reference to the long promised foot-bridge over Manuherikia River, and to request that steps should be taken at once to secure this much needed accommodation, and also that the approaches to the township, now in a bad state, should be made good for a short distance at least. I hope the deputation will be successful in attaining both objects. Of course a sum of £3OO was placed on the Estimates for the bridge, bat never spent,, so there should be no difficulty in that matter. The heaviest fall of snow of the season occurred here a few days ago, and this was followed by a keen frost, so that at present winter reigns in all its severity. A laudable race seems to be going on here amateur gardeners as to who shall plant most fruit trees. The race has been too long delayed, but " better late than never and now miniature fruit gardens ,'are| everywhere springing up. In the matter of apples, plums, pears, &c., it would be better if more of the older and larger growth were selected, as they will ultimately prove the cheaper. Mr. Pyle has got for himself and several others some ver}' handsome trees, which he expects to bear this .season, and Mr. Mulvey has got a few of the largest I have yet seen packed up country. They have all been supplied from Mr. Soritag's nursery, Dunedin.
