ATHENÆUM ENTERTAINMENT
On the evening of Friday last an entertainment of a special character was presented in the Town Hall, Naseby. Dr. W.hitton had undertaken. ,to exhibit'a 1 series of transparencies for the benefit of the Athenseuni: A large assemblage was'attracted. The first part of the evening's entertainment consisted of music, and recitations'from'several old favorites,, including, the,, always, obliging Naseby Brass Band. Mr.' Robinson occupied the chair. After the first part was concluded .the hall was darkened, and.a white 'kheet suspended from the proscenium. Upon this, by means of a magic lantern, %vere projected a great variety of scenes and pictures. Some represented picturesque . views, and others were of a humorous character. Perhaps those most appreciated were the portraits of some of .the best known inhabitants of Naseby. We may specially mention' the well kiioWn physiognomy of our worthy Mayor, and the familiar figures of two hotelkeepers, each." in his habit as he lived"—the shirt sleeves of thfi_one, .and the.,,fur cap, of the ;delightedly.\recognised. A horsed drinking in a river, was piesente.d as a, < distinguished Good. Templar, to the appropriate; tune: of " We, won't .go,)iome till morning.,":,A 'musical miner, ,the happy owner ,of ithe only donkey iii'tlio district, appeared'.on his. favorite steed—the musicians striking up the inspiriting; air, "If .1 had wot iwoitld'nt, go." In contrast, a fair." equesti ienrie was' represented, riding. . .to,, iide'n. Creek ixpon a high, spiiited charged, . about whose determination to go there could be no question. It is impossible ; for us to particularise all the pictures presented—the number ! being some of them were .parr 'ticula, rly pleasing,'and the. water iind.moonilight effects w'ere especially successful."'The .music was in mo'st instances appropriate ias, fpr bxample, when ; on the appearance of one of tlio "local cele.brities" the significant air ,of " Bobbing Around', was struck'lip. Great credit is due to Dr. Whitton for the.pains he must have taken in preparing such an entertainment, and'we 1 are glad to.be able'to riote that the 'result, in a pecuniary sense, was everything that could be desired. " The violin • and piano were most effectively performed on. By' Messrs Deaker and W. Collett. At • the conclusion 'Of the entertainment Dr. , Whitton received a cordial vote of thanks, < and also the Chairman. The receipts amounted to over,£l4.
