The Naseby Court House is rapidly pro* grassing towards completion. The building in a few days will be ready for the paiuters ; and, when iinisbed, will afford only that accommodation which, has so' long been urgently required for the proper conduct of . business. An entertainment of an unusually attractive character will take place in the 1 schoolroom, St. liathans, on the evening of July 4th, in aid of the funds of the National School. The names of the performers, and the pieces selected, are suliicient in thomsol to guarantee the success of the entertainment. A COKRESPONDEXT from Sowburn says : "A meeting was held at the Sowburn on the 20th for the purpose of givingthe schoolmaster (Mr. 0. i(oseveare) a fareweil supper, he beiug about to leave the district, 'i he meeting was well attended, and a Committee appointed, who, I think, will make it a success." TiiE delegates appointedto discuss the new Friendly Societies Bill met in Dunedin on Friday last.' It was jesolved that the clauses of the Bill should be,discussed seriatim, and at midnight Clause IS only had been reached, wlien it was resolved to adjourn until the following Friday. So far the alteiations suggested by the Conference are a great improvement on the Bill as submitted. The speei-m-im are from the Miltoa Pottery Company's Works, are of alight yellow-colored material, cheap, and iu many instances apparently as good as imported material. The half -yearly summoned meeting, for change of chairs, of the brethren of' the .Loyal INaseby Lodge, M.U.1.0 0.F., was held ou Tuesday evening last. The following brethren were elected and installed in office for the ensuing six months, viz.:— \\ G Bro S. Baxter, V.G., Bro. S. Hore; E.S., Bro. J. K. Martin—Bro. G. Stephens passing to the G.il.'s chair. Cobb's coach, which should have arrived hero at nine a.m. on Saturday morning did not make its appearance until six o'clock that evening. The reason of the delay was. we believe, that the up coach was unable to cro33 tbe Shag, which was running high, and had to remain at Pal merston instead of arriving at Pigroot, as usu?L lor the night. Through the kindness of the local postmaster the office was opened for the delivery of the mails in the evening. Latjs information from Wellington, dated Wednesday, states:—" The Keply to the Address was carried without a word from tho Opposition. VogePs intemperat speech last night induced the House to treat the Hepty with supreme contempt. Vogel rose to speak after the motion wa3 carried, and said such treatment of a rleply was unprecedented in New Zealand. The division last night was a foregone conclusion for the Government." At a meeting of the Cromwell League on the 26th memorials, extensively signed, were handed in from all centres in favor of the Dunstan and Wakatip Electoral Districts being formed into a county. The League also carried a resolution that when the runs expire they should be cut up into areas of from 3000 to 20,000 acres, and sold by auction. The action of the Clyde Political Association is ridiculed throughout the division of the electorate.—' Guardian.' Mb. Manders will on Tuesday night ask the Minister of Justice if the Government are prepared this session to introduce a Bill giving to the District Courts Act an extended jurisdiction, so as to include sentences being inflicted for a period equal to ten years' penal servitude fer criminals; al_o to give power to try all cases civilly up to the amount of £SOO, such cases being those that the Courts now deal with up to the extent of £2OO, and adding thereto cases for libel, slander, breach of promise of marriage, and seduction; but not including cases of law titles, treason, &c, as set forth in the existing Act. If not, if they will leave the matter so that it may be considered next session of this Parliament ?
•The first monthly meeting of the ne-w Athenaeum Committee was held in the library of the institution on .Monday evening last. Present—Dr. Uhitton (chair), Messrs' Ai'Latchy, Lory, Shields, Al'Hhtcbeson, Hertslet, and Ash. The minutes of last meeting -were read and confirmed. The Secretary stated that Mr. Buseh declined to act aa Treasurer, or as a member of the Committee. Mr. T Collorick was unanimously cho*sen to fill the office of Treasurer. Mr. Buseh's tender for the supply of the ' Australasian for 265. per year was accepted. An account from A. Marshall, for coal, for £2 sa. was passed for payment. The librarian's salary amounting to £6 6s. was passed for payment. It was resolved—That the Secretary write to Mr. Busch, ask ng him to state upon what terms he will continue to supply the present periodicals. liesolved—That the librarian be granted five per cent, on all moneys collected by him. Kesolvtd—That, on a date to be fixed by the sub-committee, all old papers (pictorial and other), peiiodicals, magazines, &c, with the exception of the ' Mount Ida Chronicle' and ' Southern Mrcury,' np till the end of the year 1875, be submitted by auction for sale for the benefit of the funds of the Athenaaum, together with all obtainable outside contributions ; Messrs. M'liutcheson and Hertslet to form a subcommittee. Mr. Robinson, the Permanent Chairman, stated that, having met Mr. Busob, and having received p satisfactoiy explanation of the apparent overcharge in his bill supplied the late Committee, heyoud propose that Mr. Busch's original aceoui t e passed for payment Carried. The Ac,in ;- Chairman, Dr. Whitton, consented to give a lecture in aid of the funds of Athenteum, h = Secretary to arrange necessary details. jUesolved—That in future the practice of receiving deposits on books taken from the library be discontinued. A vote of thanks to the chair brought the proceedings to a close.
,\Ys are glad to be able to state that the concert given by the Philharmonic Choir on Wednesday evening last was well attended, and quite redeems the Choir from the imputation of not being able to draw as good a house as any body in Kaseby. The proceeds will form a handsome donation io the charity in view. The attention of the police should be drawn to the larrikinism which has of late been carried on at the end of the hall. The total receipts were ,£l7 7s.
