ATHENÆUM.
(To the Editor oj the Mount Ida Chronicle ) Sih,— I wish to draw the attention of the Athenaeum Coir.mil tee to two nuisances which are frequently to be heard, seen, and smelt within the sacred precincts of the Institution—sacred, at least/ it should be from the evils complained of. I refer to loud conversation and smoking. It might reasonably be expected that some of the persons guilty would know better, having probably been in a reading room before; if so, J am sure loud conversation and smoking were never permitted. Perhaps all that is necessary to crown the felicity of some would be "to have a beer barrel placed in a corner, with a liberal supply of pipes and " twist" on the top of it. I trust the Committee will not allow the Athcnajunj to degenerate into a place of idle resort for the indulgence of gossip and tobacco.—l am, &c.,
