The data of annual Masonic Soiree Moun Ida Lodge, EC, is we believe fixed for Friday, the 7th of July.

Tehees are called for the construction of eight chains of the head race, near Ewehurn. Tenders are to be in by the 23rd. The Rev. —Hobbes lately arrived from England, will we believe, take charge of St. George's Parish, The Oddfellows ball and supper, to be given at Naseby on the Queen's Birthday,, promises to be a great success. ]S r o eifort we understand, will be spared by the Committee to make the evening worthy of the Order The ' Daily Times ' has kindly stated the position of the Tinkers case now before the Cuurt. It appears from our contemporarv's account that judgment oa the points raised" is at present withheld.

The annual meeting of the Licensing Court will be held the first Tuesday in June applications of all kinds will be considered by the Court if lodged in time and properly supported by householders as required by the Act. Forms of application can at all times be had from Mr. L. W. Uusch of Naseby.

The Electoral Roll Revision Court, will re hrld on Saturday the 20th. We observe a number of freeholders cbjected to, who ha e removed from Naseby to Eweburn or Eyeburn Diggings, whose qualifications are still good. It will not be necessary for electors bo objected to, to appear on Saturday and c-ertiiy to their qualifications—as the objection is only formal.

Ay application has been lodged by a large party of nv.ners at Hamilton for a special claim of twenty acres near the Shepherds Hut Creek and the claim of the Cornish Company. The grounds upon which the grant is asked are—that a tail race over a mi e in length, which will take three years to construct, and will running for 600 or 7uo yards through solid rock.

In reference to the proposed land sales, Sir Julius Vogel in his last reply to Mr. Maeandrew, has the following:—"I refer to thesales proposed to be made to runholders without competition, in defiance, as I am advised, of the intention of the law, and which, I feel bound to inform your Honor, the Government would have taken means to prevent but for the conviction that the Waste liinds Board would do so." What will the law advisers say, now that the land is taken out of the jurisdiction of the Board? We shall see.

The Thames 'Evening Star' deals thus practically with the Separation cry:—" If we corne to consider that the three English men-of-war now in Auckland waters could easily blow the whole of Dunedin or Auckland to bits in about three hours' time, and that they, as English vessels, could, if necessary, be called upon to enforce the the deerees of the vicegerent of the English Grown, the idea of armed resistance appears more bombastic than practicable."

A coerespondent writes to ns from Ham nfcon on sporting matters. He savs—"A private match came off on Saturday' last on the Sowburn Eacecourse between M*r. House's .Black Bess and the station chestnut for £5 a side. It was won easily by BlacV Bess. Another race is to come of on "Saturday May the aOth on the same course between Black Bess and Mr. P. Wilson's Te Kooti—stakes £2O to £ls on Black Bess. We would be glad to see other sportsmen on the ground with their horses.

Cricket in May is rather a novelty ; vet we believe JSasebyites, if the live tin the 24th will see it, raie as it is. We understand that it is the intention of some cricketers m one of the out-districts to come into on that; day, probably bringing a team with them to play tfaseby ; but if an eleven cannot be raised, to participle in a return match of Married v. Single As the Oddfellows'ball comes off in the evening they will be enabled to kill two birds with oue stone.

The 'Daily Times,' in a leader published on Saturday last, was good enough to sav the people of Naseby acknowledged the necessity of the sale of_ big blocks, provided the land sold was not in their district. Of course the people of ISaseby did no such thine, as our contemporary knew very well, for what thev did do was published in this paper, in the i-vening htar,' and was also before the Waste Lands Board. Our contemporary has chosen to take the amendment uronosed by SO- Hertslet, which could not fina a single

jsncomler in a fairly attended meeting, as being the opinion of the people of .Naseby. All they did say in their resolution was that "the sale, upon Mr. Sherman's run, formerly owned by Messrs. Murison Bros, was suit-

, able for mixed farms, and that its sale in one 1 blftqk would destroy the value of the balance of the run, except to the purchaser. The paople of Naieby werd not so foolish as to meddle with matters of high state policy. They protested against what they knew. What they did nut know they preferred to leavo unnoticod What an example did they not offer to our contemporary. Tub installation of officers of the Anchor of Safety Lodge, I. 0.G.T., took place in the lodge room If'iniiUon, on Huturdiy evening last.. The repiu'ls of tho various officers were read and approved. The Presbyterian annual soiree held at Naseby on Tuesday evening was a gieat success. We never saw a large audience in Naseby so determined to enjoy themselves. First came the indispensible tea, the eatables admirab'y supplied by Mr. S. Baxter, under great and exceptional difficulties, and the drinkables kindly looked after by Mr. E. Horswell. . The evening's programme was animated. The Be v. M'Cosh Smith was singularly happy in his address. The Philharmonic Choir's pieces were excellently rendered—Mr. Vine's services being pointedly referred to in the vote of thanks accorded to the choir.' Dr. Whitton's exhibition of the magic .lantern fairly demoralized the meetiug, the youngsters being wild with delight. The doctor had'spared no trouble in his effort to amuse, and when (Jr George appeared to the very life on the calico, followed by his Worship the Mayor, it was difficult to quell the enthusiasm. A few more pieces, excellently sung, concluded the programme. We have only space to mention tho success of the children, the local choir, Master and Miss Marshall, and others. The Committee did a wise thing in affording an opportunity of social union, and will feel well recompensed for their trouble-
