Dunedin, Thursday Evening. By a fire in Auckland yesterday, it is supposed through incendiarism, eight shops were destroyed. Insurances amount to over £6OOO. The Royal, New Zealand, and South British, are the largest interested. The City Council report in favor of tramways, and propose to build a Town Hall. , Grey issues another manifesto, addressed to the Conini'ssioners. In a part he attacks M'Lean's connection with the native'land purchases.
The Wakatip Commonage realised £2460, equal to last sales. Oamaru will be lighted by gas on Saturday.
Smith, a butcher there, died from excessive drinking. Invercargill and Wellington are agitating for the appointment of Harbor Boards. The 'Times ' protests against such bodies having the power to borrow from English market, as, in the case of default, Colonial credit will suffer. The Minister of Justice promises to circu : late a new Friendly Societies' Bill among the bodies interested before Parliament meets. At the Education Board meeting to-day a number of applications for new schools, and for grants for repairs or new schools, were deferred, the Board agreeing that it was useless to take up any works involving expenditure, seeing they have no money at their disposal. The subsidy to the Ida Valley school is withdrawn on account of the paucity of attendance. SYDNEY. May 10th. Subscriptions for assisting the Strathmore survivors are coming in slowly. MKLBOtIRNE. ...A. nugget, weighing twelve pounds, has been found at Hard Brett's rush. The Colonial Wool Merchant's Association in London complain of jtbe undue dumping of wool before the shipment, and recommends increased vigilance to prevent the evil. The report regarding the seizure of Stevenson's goods for evading the duty proves untrue.
