ST. BATHANS.
(From a correspondent.) March 6th, The earthquake reported in your paper last week, and which appears to have been generally felt from JNaseby dowuwards to Dunedin, has not troubled us with' a visit—at least as far as I can learn —and we are content that such is the case. If I were ever so sleepy I would prefer getting turned out by a bucket-ful of cold water rather than be frightened or bumped out violently by those M) r stcrious subtcraneous powers. St. David's Day was celebrated at
Cambrian by a picnic and a ball, given in the schoolroom at night. Both were well-attended. The room was tastefully decorated with flowers and evergreens for the occasion. . St Patrick's Day, 17th inst., will be celebrated in a similar manner —namely, by a picnic during the day, and a dance in the schoolroom, St. Bathans, at night. The picnic will be held near the new bridge, Muddy Creek, and near to Hawkdun Station. "As yet, there is no sign that the promised footbridge across the Manuherikia will be erected before the;winter.. There is aiso a small footbridge needed across Dunstan: .-Creek. The old one supplied and- kept in repair for the last ten years by local subscription was destroyed by a flood some months ago. Children have to creek going to school and coming home. In wet weather men would not attempt the crossing. Residents are of opinion that ifc is thr duty of the Government to maintain a footbridge here. I understand that an pppeal'on behalf of the public—to that effect was forwarded some time ago by our local Progress Committee.
