Dunedin, Thursday Evening, At the inquest into the fire at Hfllgrove (Culling's station), near Moeraki, the jury were unable to agree, and were bound over to appear at the assizes. "A tremendous fall of rain occurred at Timaru last night—3 "25 inches in twelve hours. The City Council have requested the School Committee to close all the town schools on account of the fever, which the latter refused to do. Several fresh cases are reported. The Queen's speech at the opening of Parliament was generally congratulatory. ' CABLEGRAMS. AH the banks in Melbourne protest against the income tax. The Victorian Assembly are discussing the income tax. There is considerable opposition thereto. Helmuth Schwartze and Co., London, telegraph their Dunedin agent respecting wool sales as follows:—Wool sales opened with large attendance of both home and foreign buyers. Total arrivals of Australian wools comprise 66,000 bales. Competition animated.
