HYDE SCHOOL INSPECTION

Mr. Petrie, the Inspector, paid a visit to the Hyde school on February 10th, when he subjected the scholars to a most rigid and painstaking examination, lasting throughout the entire day. The following is a copy of the report:— ' The Hyde school was visited by me on the 10th February. The state of instruction was very satisfactcny. Beading fluent, and generally very fair. In the lower classes, better expression and a natural grouping of words deserve somewhat more attention. Spelling (oral) and dictation—good. Writing —fair. Exercise books neatly written, and carefully kept. Arithmetic—Very fair in upper classes. In the lower, a thorough mastery of oral addition and subtraction should be acquired. The pupils had better learn addition table in Keith and Wilkie's Table-book, and get no slate exercises, except in numeration and notation, until that table is well known. Grammar—fair. Geography—good. Comprehension of meaning—good in the upper classes, but rather defective in some of the lower ones. The pupils are attentive, and respectful. Discipline, class movements, and moral aspect—very good. £ Since last visit Mr. O'Dell has been discharging his duties with manifest zeal and success. D. Petrie, M.A., Inspector of Schools.
