ST. BATHANS RACES.
(To thejEditorofthe Mount Ida Chboniclb.) Sib,—Your "own correspondent," in reporting the St. Bathans Races, says, with regard to the Selling Race—" The Stewards deserve credit for the successful carrying out of thgjneeting, and more especially for their firmness in dealing with the Selling Race difficulty, in which the owner of the winning horse, while claiming the stakes, refused to submit the animal for competition." In reply, I deny the truth of your correspondent's statement. I. submitted the animal for competition, but the police having warned the impromptu auctioneer, he declined to carry out the sale, after having refused an offer of £l6 for the mare. After considerable delay the Steward's proposed selling the mare by what is termed a " mock auction." This conclusion of theirs was arrived at, as I say, after much delay and some confusion, and I then certainly declined to remain myself and keep my mare exposed under a downpour of rain. This is the whole truth or the matter, and your correspondent might have told it instead of telling just as much of it as tends to hold me up for undeserved censure with your readers.—l am, &c., James Halley, Owner of the winning horse.
