STATUTORY SCHOOL MEETING, KYEBURN DIGGINGS.

(communicated. )

The annual educational meeting was held in the Church on Monday, the 10th inst. Mr. T. Forgie vvas called to the Chair. The Secretary, Mr. J. F. Christian, after submitting the balance-sheet—-which was adopted—read the following report: — On taking office one year ago, your Committee found a debt of £1 7s. 6d. from previous year. They also found that a new stove and other conveniences were required for the upper school, and some small repairs to the lower one.

The Committee having, as you are aware, no income, it therefore became necessary to devise means for raising funds to meet those liabilities, but having strong objections to the over recurring, and much abused system of subscription lists they decided in the first place to ask Mr. Armstrong to lecture, and subsequently the Olee Club to give a concert in aid of the funds, fioth of our requests were readily complied with, and with the proceeds we have been enabled to pay off last year's debt, meet the expenses of the current year, and leave for oar successors a balance of £3 lis. to begin the present year with. There was a further sum of £1 10s. collected to provide prizes for the children at an examination conducted by the Rev. Mr. M'Cosh Smith in June last—the result of which must have been as gratifying to the parents as it was creditable to the teacher.

Your Committee would here point out the desirability of continuing these examinations, which, while creating, as they do, a healthy spirit of emulation among the children, are an incentive to the teacher to use every means in his power to advance his pupils. Your Committee have also succeeded in getting the school raised from a subsidised to a side school, an alteration which, - while increasing the Government allowance to £75 per annum, is in other respects of some importance, seeing that an alteration in the form of Government will probably take place in a short time, and this may—in a measure at least—affect the educational system. In conclusion, we beg to return our sincere thanks to those who have so kindly assisted ub in leaving the affairs of the school in so satisfactory a condition.

A unanimous vote of thanks was then passed to the Betiring Committee for the very efficient manner in which they have conducted the affairs of the schocl, also a special vote of thanks to Mr. J. F. Christian for the able manner in which he has conducted the correspondence. The meeting then proceeded to elect a committee for the ensuing year. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the business of the meeting.
