Lowther Broad,. Esq., has been &p_. pointed a District Judge for the District of Nelson. - Mr. David Hutcheson, the leader of the party sent out by the Governments of Ota *o and Canterbury; to survey and' form the road to the West Coast; - has: returned, the work having been suspended for the present. . The past twelve months' has been occupied in forming the road f rom the head of Lake Wanaka to Burke River, nearly halfway to the West Coastr The work has been greatly impeded by excessively rainy weather, flooding the rivers and preventing supplies being brought forward. But for this, the whole distance would have been completed./ A. man named Lindsay, one of the party, formerly at Manuka Station, had been sent to Haast Kiver for supplies shortly before leaving, and not having returned, five men were sent to endeavor to find hirn, but returned without a trace of him. The runs taken up on the West Coast can now be stocked from Otago by this route, which avoids the very frequent crossing of rivers. Mr. Hutcheson has' found an available ford over the Burke Kiver, which he would soon have made serviceable. We will not give further particulars at present, as Mr. HutchesonV official, report will be present to the Government next week.— 4 Bruce Herald. ?
