A judgment in the Dunedin Residen Magistrate's Court, in the case ofßobertson v. De Montalk, should (the * Guadian" thinks) act as a caution to the holders of bottle licenses in the giving of credit, for large quantities of liquor. In this instance the plaintiff had in an account tor groceries entered up 34 bottles of whisky at 3s. 6d. per bottle, amounting in all to £,5 19s. His Worship, with a scent for " liquor " worthy of an advanced officer in the G-.T's., or a distillery inspector, immediately discovered these 34 bottles, even though hid away in sundries valued £4O, besides one or two bottles of port wine and several -bottles of beer. Mr. Bathgate scarcely thought that •he was justified in passing the wine and the beer, but he had a decided objection to whisky under any circumstances,; and immediately struck the 34 victims out, a proceeding objected to in no very pleasant tones by the plaintiff. He thought that as he had paid his license he was entitled to recover, to which his Worship replied that sufficient liquor for ordinary purposes could be obtained without it being necessary to give credit for such large quantities. Tradesmen like plaintiff need not come into his Court and hope to have any consideration given them for such claims.
