ST. BATHANS.
(To the Editor of the Mount Ida Chronicle.) September. 26, 1865. The almost sudden death of Mr. Edmund Purton on Thursday, 23rd inst., has cast a gloom over the entire population of St. Bathans. Mr. Purton was a native of Hanley Castle, Worcestershire, England. Intended in early life for the Church, his education was superior. Since his arrival here, a few years ago, he followed the occupation of mining, and, in that capacity, he seemed to delight in taking upon himself the roughest and the most slavish work. It was in this way that, with his usual disregard of self, and while performing some work in connection with the Scandinavian Water Eace during the late snow-storm, he caught a severe cold which led to inflamation of the lungs, and, eventually, to his death. He .was an. ardent and devout Catholic, and had the happiness of receiving the last sacraments of the Church at the hands of Father Walsh, who posted a distance of twenty-five miles for that purpose—the day before his death. On that same afternoon Dr. Pultney, in answer to a telegraphic message, arrived from Naseby, but medical skill was unavailing to save from death him, who, but a few days ago, was so full of health and strength. A man of refined culture, modest almost to bashfulness—as if he would conceal all his better qualities—urbane, kindly, high-spirited and jovial, those who were even casually acquainted with him could not but love and respect him. • Followed by the entire adult population of St. Bathans, as well as representatives from Naseby, Ophir and Devonshire—places twenty-five miles distant—and also from Blackstone Hill and Cambrian, the mortal remains of Edmund Purton were deposited in the Catholic cemetery, St. Bathans,. on the 25th instant. JRequiescat in Pace.
