A walking epidemic appears to have broken out in Dune din. Fred Wain bet a level £SO that he would walk 100 miles within twenty, four hours. • ■
Young Scott has accepted Edwards' challenge for a seven mile match of £SO, but Edwards has silice tiried off.
The civic elections have been causing much' excitement. At the Mayoral nomination tomorrow it is believed only Crs. Walter arid Reeves will he nominated.
The matter of the Heriot Hundred, and the application of attachment against D ; Reid, Horace Bastings, and Henry Clark was before the Supreme Court all yesterday. Eeid in his affidavit says:—" T believed- -when I, voted for the resolution authorising applications to be deceived that morning (July 6), and still believe, that the Chief Commissioner has no authority to interfere with the District Land Officers; and I was advised that, were the said officers to have refused td receive the said applications, they would have laid themselves open to grievous litigation and action for damages." The motion is to be decided on Saturday.
At the Lawrence Town Council Revision Court the Mayor (Matthew Hay) and Cr. Frear (candidate for the Mayoralty) cjuarellecl. . The Mayor took off his cOat, and threatened mortal combat, using language more forcible than polite. A fight was oiify prevented by the intervention of the other' Councillors.
At the Annual meeting of the New Zealand Insurance Company, held at Auckland yesterday, a dividend of twenty per cent., was declared. There remains to the" credit of the profit and ioss account £19,686. Brown, M. H. LI. , was entertained at a dinner at Lawrence last night, aud was presented with a purse of 200 sovereigns.
