DEFEAT OF THE BASTINGS GOVERNMENT. . . Dunedin, Wednesday. The Government were beaten at about three o'clock this morning-on a direct'vote of want of confidence, moved by Reid. Division list—--24 for, and 19 against. It, is understood that Turnbull will not be in the, new Government. * Dunedin, Thursday Evening. The Tararua is at the Bluff with the mail. On the Council meeting to-day, Reid met them wifch-a Government much the same as announced yesterday.: Green has joined as Secretary for Works, Reid taking the Lands and take the Lands, but Reid .declined to, give up his seat at the Land Board. ReidL made a long:statement; in the course of ■ which he said he; had asked,M'Lean. to';:join.. The Government, would, proceed with the original Estimates, and bring down, , as. Supplementary Estimates, £13,000 for new! works, as on'i Bastings' Estimates. ;: WitK : reference to railways, he asked the Council to sanction the construction (out of loan or advance from the General Government) of the: railways ap- '- peafitig iu the, secontl schedule, and asked for alternative- power to cbhstrucit them out of revenue.
