THE MOUNT IDA PUBLIC WORKS.

The following is the reply of his •Honor the Superintendent to the memorial on the above subject which appeared in a recent issue:—~

".Provincial Secretary's Office, Dunedin, May 22,1875. " Gentlemen, —I am directed by his Honor ; the Superintendent to acknowledge the receipt of your memorial addressed to him, calling attention to the incomplete state of the Mount Ida "Water "Works, pointing out thejneees* sity for a further sum to be expended thereon, and expressing an opinion that it remains almost, entirely with**,his Honor.whether these works shaU'De completed or not. In reply I am to state that, while the Superintendent is fully alive to the very great importance of the subject, and will do his best in the way of urging the Colonial Government to extend the wards the work in question, he must at the same time take exception to the position of potentiality in this matter which you attribute to him, and decline to be held responsible for the result. "It is quite a mistake to assume tbat the Superintendent has any such power or influence as you appear to assign to him. Were it otherwise I am toassure you that the work would be speedily completed. As ifc is, the last two paragraphs in your memorial had better have been left <*ut, as being calculated to prejudice rather than advance the object aimed at. " I have the honor to be, " Gentlemen, " Your most obdt. servt., " Alex. Wnoua, "Under Seretary." To the Gentlemen signing the Memorial.
