It is stated (says the Geelong Advertiser) that '" Sir C. GK Duffy, 'snugly lodged at Cannes, the paradise of Southern France, is engaged upon the writing of two books. The first -is' a ; novel of Victorian life, after the manner of Disraeli's " Lothair." This work is all but finished, and advance copies of it Will be in Melbourne,.probably in two or three months. The second book is a historical review of the Toung Ireland agitation, its origin, failure, and ultimate issues. Both books are of the nature of self-vindications—the first as to the Australian career, the second as to his Irish career." A correspondent in the ' Fanciers* Gazette ' writes :—I do not know if the operation be common in England, but it is often performed north of the Tweed. It is a very simple one, and not at all dangerous. I have known it beneficial in cases of poisoning when taken'in time. I was rather surprised, as well as amused, the /first time I saw the thing done. I was .having a new kilt tried on in Invernessshire, when the knight of the bodkin dropped his' thimble. One of the ducks who were waddling about the floor swallowed it, but which was the poser. At any rate, the worthy kilt-builder did not hesitate a moment. He caught a duck and turned its crop out; it wasn't there, and he sewed it up at once. , .Then he caught another, and secured the.thimble. In the meantime I stood looking on with no clothes worth mentioning; barring my waistcoat—a very Highland indeed, but interested spectator.
