-'A p . .' , i The stench pervading the Resident Magistrate's Goiirt offices having '- become absolutely intolerable (says the 'Evening" Post'), notwithstanding the lavish use of various antiseptic and disinfectant -preparations, the authorities at length have had the floor taken up; and'a search made for the generating cause _,of this 1 malodorous exhalation. This soon..was-- ascertained. Horrible to relate,'on-raising the- flooring boards a'dead body'was discovered'ln an 1 advanced stage of decomposition; The remains were removed at once for interment. There appears' no of the body being identified, or of the -name of the deceased being ascertained. ' The sad history of the melancholy catastrophe must remain for ever untold. We almost forgot to mention 'that the body was that of an exceedingly big rat.' - ' A correspondent from Hyde sends the ' Tablet' the following under date; 12th inst: —On yesterday our respected parish priest, the Rev. E. lioyrr, celebrated .Mass here to a large congregation,- and preached a most eloquent and impressive "sermon .on the Gospel of the day,- after which,' he touched on the education of the, children in a most feeling 'manner. „ This unassuming clergyman-has, at .his own expense, purchased " a buildingjor school-" purposes, started- a school, • and volunteered his services as teacher until a competent person can be got to take .charge. It is conduct such as this which-has and will continue to engender between the priest' and his people that feeling of love, reverence, and respect which has- existed, and will contine to exist, until time .is at an end. Let us hope that this gcod and holy man may be spared to see grow up'arounH him to man's estate, those little ones in whom he is now taking an interest, and that he will enjoy the pleasure of seeing the fruits of his quiet and persevering labors in the great work of his Master.' I believe the committee have not as yet received any applications for the appointment of teacher, though T am satisfied whatever lady takes charge of it will find no cause for complaint.—A correspondent at St. Bathans, reports ..that the Rev. Father Walsh, the lately appointed pastor, has purchased fifty acres of land at Blacks, which is situated hi trie centie of his mission, wheron he intends to erect a presbytery. It speaks well for the energy of the rev. gentleman, and the liberality of his parishioners, that already a sum of nearly £3OO has been collected for the object in view. At Tinker's, the Catholics have not been idle, having just built a neat, little church, , which is to be consecrated by his Lordship the Bishop upon his approaching visit. It must be extremely gratifying to the Catholic community 'to find >that in.so'short a time as-has elapsed since the advent of the clergymen introduced by. the Vicar-Gene- - •ml, the *. effects of theii" labors "are so generally" felt and gratefully, acknowledged. .
