MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting was held at the Council Chambers, Town Hall, on Wednesday evening last. Present—Ms Worship the Mayor, Crs. Inder, Craig, Greer, Newmarch, and Brookes.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. - . . . COEEESPONDENGE— -OTJTWABD. Copy letter to late Inspector of Nuisances; copy letter to Sub-Inspector M'Cluskey, requesting him to recommend a constable for the vacant office; copy letter to Secretary for Works, calling attention to the delay in the erection of the Court. House, stating that the entire absence of accommodation necessarily retards the business, and urging the necessity of starting the new building as early as possible : and also pointing out the inadequate accommodation at the gaol; copy letter to Secretary Public Works, informing him that the Corporation is desirous that certain sections in the Town should be set apart for Municipal Reserves, and requesting that the District Surveyor be instructed, as early as possi T ble, to consult with the Council in the selection of suitable land for the purpose, as it is the intention of the Corporation to make application to the Government during the ensuing session. INWARD. Letter from Secretary Fire Brigade, informing the Council that the brigade had been re-organised. Letter from Sub-Inspector M'Cluskey, stating that the Commissioner of Police had recommended Constable M'Namara for the office of Inspector of Nuisances. Letter from Mr. JE. T. George, calling attention to the heaps of muck swept from the gutters, corner of Leven and Earn.streets, not being cleared away in proper time. BETTJEN. A return (in reply to motion by Cr. Newmarch) showing the expenditure at present incurred in the erection of the Town Hall," and liabilities in connection with the same, was read and laid upon the table, by which it appeared that the expenditure had been £2143 10s. 7d.; liabilities £201155. EEPOBTB. ■-.•■■ The General Purposes Committee reported, in reply to the application of Messrs. Flanagan and M'Grath, for permission to work across Ness-street, that they had inspected the ground required, and could see no reason why the concession asked should not be granted, provided Flanagan and M'Grrath, in the meantime, make a temporary road, and afterwards make good the street to the same level as at present to the satisfaction of the Committee, and enter into a bond for £SO for the due performance of the work within a reasonable time to be agreed on. The report was adopted, on the motion of Cr. Ceaig.
The same Committee also reported re arrangements for letting Town Hall, to whom the matter was referred at last meeting—" That, after careful consideration, and estimating the cost of the lighting and cleaning, they recommend that a Committee be appointed, to be called " The Town Hall Management Committee," consisting of the Mayor and three Councillors. That this Committee be empowered to let the Hall, and make all necessary arrangements the maximum price to be £3 for one night, the minimum to be 10s., and that the Committee be also empowered to let the front rooms at any time they think proper." Cr. Newmaech considered 10s. insufficient, and would move that the sum for letting the Town Hall be from £3 to £l r which was not seconded ; and the report was adopted, as read, on the motion of Cr. Bbookbs, seconded by Cr. Cbaig.
COMMITTEE. Moved by Cr. Cbaig, seconded by Cr. ]Sewmarch—" That the Public Parposes
Committee be the Committee appointed to take the management of the Town Hall." Carried.
JANITOR,,ETC. Moved by Or. CiiAni, seconded by Cr. BitooKus, and carried—" That the Council endeavor to procure a man to do all the work that may be required on streets and drain*, &0., to ligh the lamps, and take charge of the Town Hall at £2 per .week." By Cr. Newmaroh—" That tenders be called for lighting and cleaning of the Town Hall at per time, including cleaning or sweeping of Council Chambers, as ocsion may require." Pell through, for want of a seconder. INSPECTOB OP NUISANCES. Moved by Cr. Ckaig, seconded by Cr. Gbeeb, and carried M'Namara be appointed Inspector of Nuisances, at a salary of £lO per year, to comxnenoo from this date, 7th April, 1875." FINANCE. The following accounts were passed for payment:—P. Tootell, contract painting, &0., £26 65.; Tootell, decoration of ball room, £2; Mrs. Tootell, •cleaning, &c, £2 Bs.; Extended Water Company (water), £1 3s. 4d.; Mason and Wales, architects, Dunedin, £lO 10s.; Morrison and Langmnak, work and materials, £2 17s. 6d.; N.
