SUCCESSFUL SIRES, IN 1874.
The records of the past racing season (says the 'Pall Mall Gazette') would not be complete without some allusion to the sires whose representatives have achieved the largest measure of success. The triumph of Apology and Aventuriere enable Adventurer to take the highest place, for his stock have won £21,057, which is nearly £SOOO more than is credited to Blair Athoi, whose principal winners haye, with the exception of Prince Charlie, been two-year-olds. When Tomahawk won the Lincolnshire Handicap and Atlantic, the Two Thousand Guineas it seemed as if their sire would become the hero of the season, but Atlantic and Tomahawk did not fulfil their early promise, andThormanby had few other representatives of special merit. Still he is third in the list, being more than £2OOO ahead of Marsyas, whose total of £10,277 is mainly contributed by George Frederick, Louise Victoria, and Louise. Cathedral is not what is known as a " fashionable " sire, but his stock generally figure to advantage in one or more of the important handicaps of the season, and this year has been no exception to the rule, for Organist won the Chester Cup with a much heavier weight than is usually allotted to three-year-olds. The performances of Camballo place Cambuscan in a better position than he has formerly occupied, and if this colt should next year fulfil the expectations which are entertained of him Cambuscan will make a still further advance. Lord Clifden, Saunterer, and the deceased Beadsman come next, but none of their progeny were animals of remarkable excellence, though Chaplet may do better as a three-year old than her brother Kosicrucian. Stockwell is still represented, though nearly five years have elapsed since his death, and with Doncaster and Gang Forward his reputation has been maintained until the very last. If Couronne de Per had not been defective in his lungs, it is probable that Macaroni would already have been the sire of a Derby winner, and, even as it is, he runs Stockwell a close race for priority; and his offspring include Lily Agnes, as to whose excellence there can be no two opinions. The victories of 7>olhiua hnvo given Caterer a rice in the lift, and it is not a little singular that he should stand next to Stockwell and Macaroni, who,
like liiia, wore ouch ijnurtured, at the Hootoii stud. King Tom has bt-en less successful than usual, for ££4950 is a email sum for a fire whose produce generally obtain for hi in a total of five figures, and ho Ik.» certainly not done po well as Hermit, '"ho, with Holy Friar, Trappist, and St. Agatha, will be still more successful next season. Morfarque, Trumpeter,' and Parmesan are among the sires whose reputation is on the wane, and as ihe first-men-tioned died during last summer he will in the course of the nest fV-w years disappear from the list altogether. There is no need to examine the statistics of " winning sires" in any great detail, but it may be worth while to point out that G-ladiateur still occupies a very humble point, and that The Duke, Lord Lyon, The Earl, Ely, The Palmer, and Victorious, from all of whom such great things were expected, have fai'ed still more completely. Adventurer, as has been already mentioned, stands first with a itotal of more than. £20,000, while" the rear is brought up by eleven horses, the progeny of which have won but £SO each.
