MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Council was held at the Council Chambers on Wednesday December 2nd. Present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Inder, Greer, Hjorring, Newmarch, Brookes, and Craig. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. COBBESPONDEUCB. —OUTWARDS : Copy of letter to Mr. Surveyor Barron, calling attention to certain sections advertised for sale in Broom-street, numbered respectively 147, 148, 149, 150, and 151, which in September last had been requested by the Council to be withheld from sale, as the alienation of the same at present would materially affect mining. Copy of letter to Provincial Treasurer, requesting that the fines inflicted under the Bye-Laws be paid over to the Corporation, and that instructions be given to the Clerk of the Bench to pay the same, in future, direct to the Town Clerk. tnwabd : Letter from Naseby Eire Brigade, signed by sixteen members, tendering their resignation, and stating that they did not feel, justified in carrying on any longer at their own expense. Letter from the Under-'Secretary, in reply to Clerk's, stating that the Superintendent had addressed the Honorable the Colonial Secretary on the matter of building a new Court House at Naseby—a sum of money having been voted for the same at the last session of the General Assembly. ; Letter from Mr. de Lautour, M.P.C., calling the attention of the Council to page 420 of the ' Provincial Gazette,' No. 18, in which would be found a most liberal endowment of lands to the Municipality of Cromwell, and suggesting the advisability of Naseby securing, if possible, a similar provision for the benefit of the Town. .•■:•
Letter from the Secretary Mining Asr sociation, calling attention to the fact of certain sections in Broom-street having been advertised for sale on the Bth December. These sections, if sold, it; had been pointed out, would be injurious to mining interest. . Letter' from the Secretary Fire Brigade, informing the Council that the exBrigade are willing to remain intact for one month, in order that the Council may have time to organise a new Brigade. —After considerable discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Cbaig—- " That the Town Clerk write to the Secretary of the Fire Brigade, requesting that a statement of grievances (if any) be laid before the Council; and to inform the Secretary that the Council is willing to bear any reasonable expense which might be incurred: also thanking the Brigade for past services. At this stage Cr. Newmabch requested permission to retire. BEPOBTS. The -report"of the General Purposes Committee, re main south road, was read and received. The monthly report of the Finance Committee was read and adopted ; which stated, amongst other things, the necessity of enforcing early payment of the rate, and recommended that the Town Clerk, be instructed to take legal proceedings against all defaulters within a month. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment:—'Mount Ida Chronicle,' £1 18s.; Water Works Company, £2 j Matthew Craig, labor, £1 10s.; George Stephens, £2O Is.; ' Daily Times,' £1 Is. 6d.; Wm. Jacob, Town Hall, £SO.
