ELECTION OF COUNCILLORS.

There was some stir towards 4 p.m. on Saturday last, the day fi xe d for the election of candidates. Too only two candidates (that is a misnomer, for both gentlemen wished heartily to be out ol it) thought likely to have a chance in the West Ward wero Messrs. Glenn and Greer (Mr. Dillon had publijly announced his inability to act), although it was known that Mr. Alexander was working hard. The result was in favor of Mr. Greer, the votes being : Greer ... 19 Glenn 11 Dillon ... 3 Alexander ... ... 2 Law 2

For the South Ward the contest lay between the two consenting candidates, i Messrs. Hay and Newmarch—the result being in favor of the latter. The votes were:—

Newmarch 17 Hay 10 Bremner 4 Mr. Bremner was absent, and had expressed a strong disinclination to act. His Worship declared Messrs. Greer and Newmarch duly elected. Mr. Hay protested against the election of Mr. Newmarch, his seconder (Mr. G. Stephens) having signed the nomination paper without knowing who he was to nominate ; and, also, not having a qualification in the South Ward.

Mr. Newmarch, who was called on, appropriately thanked-the electors. Mr. Greer was not present. M Mr. Glenn, who wa* called cri, said it was well known he wished to be out of it —nevertheless, he thanked those who had voted for him. Another time if lie contested a seat, and meant it, he had no <doubt he would be well supported.
