POLICE V. HORSWELL.
(To the Editor of the Mount Ida Cheoniclb.)
.Sib, —Taking a stroll in the town on the |l6th, on account of the frost stopping my work, hearing that it was Court day, like many more idlers, I went. Mr. Horswell ■was summoned for allowing a raffle in his house. This being proved by the constable and witnesses, the Magistrate allowed the time of the Court to be taken up by uncalled for remarks made by the counsel for the defence* attacking Mr. Sub-Inspector M'Clnskey—remarks stating that whichf was untrue. I have re-.-gided in Nasebyfor nine years. [Raffling papers, I may say, were up in every bar of most public houses, before Mr. M'Cluskey came to Naseby. Ahorse to be raffled: putter-up spend £2, winner, £l. I remember Mr. Collett, of the Ancient Briton Hotel, being summoned with five others by the Sub-Inspector, getting off with a reprimand. The defendants and others in Court had the law read, to them from the Bench. On another occasion the same party got fined ss. or 10s. for throwing dice. Other parties had the same in this town.
In my opinion, the police have put a stop to these swindles; and, if publicans take unlawful games for gain, they must put up with the consequences.—l ami &c, Head Race.
