NASEBY SLUDGE CHANNEL.
The following telegram was forwardedyesterday morning to- the Premier by the Naseby Committee: —
ThelHon. the Premier, Wellington. District has received notification that Government, by letter to Superintendent dated July 2, decline to-authorise alterations .Naseby Sludge Channel, on the ground of vote being too nearly exhausted to justify increased expenditure. _ Government can hardly be aware, although technically correct, the original plan is practically useless for mining, the levels of Channel being above the bottom of auriferous ground. The whole expenditure will. be thrown . away if levels unaltered. All the district ask is that as far as the work is carried it shall be efficient. If necessary private enterprise will complete an efficient work.. Would the Government consent to alterations on the understanding that, .when no more money was available, the Channel should/terminate .2 The expensive part of alterations is at the top end, where it is a matter of extreme doubt whether any public Channel is necessary. I should be glad to be able to- inform pub~ lie meeting, to beheld on Saturday nfght, that the Government ; will reconsider determination. * 1 C. A. DI LttJTOTJB, M.P.C., Chairman of Committee. Later in the day Mr. Mervyn put his question in the House, of which he had given notice at the request of the Committee. We have this morning received from that gentleman the following : Wellington,* ' Mount Ida Chronicle,' Naaeby. The Government have agreed to deepen the Slu !ge Channel. Ycu will receive particulars hi cine co..rse. D. Hoitt:er]Mebyyk. The following, also received to-day, has been handed to .us; for publication : * - . .' -. ••-■-'. 'Wellington, July 24. C.
