MAEREWHENUA

Mr. Sumpter,. M.P.C., visited the ' Maerewhenua Goldfieid on Tuesday week last. A good number of the electors met him in the large room of the Commercial Hotel, and matters concerning the district were discussed.- Anumberof questions were put, to all of which.satisfactory answers were given.- The'matter of the £SOO voted for-the road between the township and - Harris' was brought forward, so also was the promised track to Stotfqld station: From thence there is a good road to. Oamar u, and some ten miles shorter than that by Harris'. Mr. Sumpter expressed .surprise that .the track had not been made. The present most unsatisfactory postal .service (only once a week) to this place was also 1 mentioned, , and ,the, urgent .necessity ..for a money, order office being'opened was also shown. ; ■ "• The materials for the much talked of bridge have arrived at last, and are r now readj for the workmen to place them together again. The timber, " &c.,- "was brought, from Palmerston, and had been used previously for bridge purposes across the Ska'g Eiver at that place. When erected the bridge will be a great boon to the families, living on the other side of the river—especially to the ladies and children. We are patiently waiting for rain. For som»; time past the supply of water has been falling off' considerably. When we are favored with a copious supply of this indispensable element I have no doubt whatever but that you will hear good accounts from this place.
